Serbia: Former American Football Player Announces Candidacy For President

$

0

We don't normally cover political topics, besides the ones caused by IFAF vs IFAF. however, this is just.. Too good of a story to be ignored. However, we will ignore the system in Serbia for this one though, as we would like to focus on more positive things, such as.. A 26 year old former football player winning 20% of the votes in Mladenovac, Serbia, by coming up with an alias which is mocking everything most politicians stand for - starting with corruption and nepotism. Not long after that - he announced his presidential candidacy.

Luka Maksimović used to play football for 6 years at Mladenovac Forestlanders and Belgrade Blue Dragons. He was also a member of the U19 Serbian national team. And just a few days ago - he managed to collect enough signatures to go into the presidential race.

What makes him and his campaign special is that he's surrounded by young, college graduates, who probably were never in politics before. The whole story about mocking politics is what created the buzz, starting with Luka's alias name and styling.

People got tired of the same story they were being sold, so he came in like a breath of fresh air. He managed to do what no politician was able to - to get the young and older to believe again, as well as to get the "voting abstinents" to wake up.

Now, this caused problems as well. From some of the opposition trying to tag along (where he thanked each and every single one of them on Twitter, and asked them not to support him), to the ones in charge trying to obstruct him being eligible to run for president. Also, toss in a few national media outlets putting out "exclusives" of Luka being financed by George Soros (note that the people were donating money for the fee of getting the signatures verified, not to mention - the people were bringing necessary electronics to places signatures were being collected at), and so on.

However, the crowd that's drawn to him is showing major support, and it's impossible to ignore it. And this is where the power of Internet kicks in to spread the word, as there is pretty much no budget behind this guy.

Why is Luka so interesting?

Let's start with the name he goes under. It's rather tough to do a direct translation to English, however we'll try to explain it - Ljubiša Preletačević Beli. Ljubiša is a common Serbian name, where the root of the word is "kiss/ing/es". Preletačević - Preletač is used for any politician switching between political parties for his own benefit, while "(ev)" is a common ending of Serbian last names. Beli means white - as he's always wearing a white suit, with his pants tucked into "grandma knitted" socks.

His associates also have their own roles.

His candidates list name is "Sarmu prob'o nisi", which means "You haven't tried the cabbage rolls" - it's not as funny in English. If you're not sure what a cabbage roll is - google Sarma. His candidacy is going under "Beli - Samo Jako". Which could be translated to Go Hard.

If you're from Serbia, you can help him by making a donation:

We're going to end this article here, however we're looking forward seeing what this former athlete will do. And, for the end - to bring laughs and joy Luka brings to his people - Luka arriving in the city of Kragujevac in style - enjoy!

Daniel Kelly: Bold Prediction - Tim Tebow To Play MLB For The NY Mets

$
0
0
Tim Tebow. When you hear that name, what does it do within you? Does it get under your skin or does it inspire you? There probably have been more articles written about Tim Tebow, than just about any other person on the face of the planet. However, this article will be different than all the rest, that's because the writer is different from everyone else.

You may be thinking to yourself, wait a minute, this is a football website, why is he writing about a baseball player? Well, true, this article is a little outside the pocket, but that's only because this story is bigger than football, bigger than baseball and bigger than professional sports itself. Point blank, this is the biggest story of our time.

Sportswriters and scouts alike completely miss the boat about Tebow for the most part and I think it's safe to say at this point, nobody else on the entire planet sees in him what has been shown to me. Who am I? Well, once upon a time I was hired by Bill Parcells and Bill Belichick if that gives any juice to this electronic fastball.

Let me ask you this, how many people in the world could not play baseball for 12 years and step into the batter's box with the New York Mets? This isn't the Miracle on 34th street, but it's one of the biggest miracles we have ever witnessed. Sure, every time another baseball player in the majors strikes out it doesn't make national news, but every time Tebow swings and misses and any time he supposedly even looks at the umpire wrong, it makes the headlines, "Extra, extra read all about it," as the blood thirsty Tebow critics throw a little chin music his direction, but why is that? It's because the world continues to be extremely threatened by the man who they say can't, but he does it anyways.

The reality is this, so far this spring Tebow has looked the part and has not backed down from anyone. He didn't even flinch against Cy Young Award Winner, Rick Porcello of the Boston Red Sox. In his first real major league at bat, he dug into the batter’s box and stood in there like David against Goliath. It's in that moment I knew what I knew was true, Tim Tebow is going to make it in Major League Baseball. Notice, I didn’t say he’s going to make it in the minor leagues. I didn’t say anything about A, AA or AAA. I’m saying he’s going to get called up. He’s going to make it in the big leagues. He’s going to play for the New York Mets, period. Like Babe Ruth, I'm pointing at the fence and calling the shot. That's my scouting report.

Tebow is not another one of these athletes that gives the 'ol token pointing at the sky or the typical token, "I give all the glory to God" type of guys. No, Tim Tebow is the most anointed person on this planet since King David in the Bible. That's how he does the impossible time and time and time again. The cool thing about the word impossible is, that is God's very zip code. That's where God hangs out. That's where God lives. You see, the word "can't" does not even exist in Tim Tebow's vocabulary and I'd like to suggest there would not even be any critics if the word "can't" did not exist in their own personal lives.

I used to think that Tim Tebow coming back to the NFL would be the very thing that would give God the most glory and trust me, when I become a GM, I will make every effort to pull the trigger and make him my franchise quarterback. However, after further review, Tebow making the Mets is far more seemingly impossible. With that said, now I see why God opened the door for him to play baseball. Tebow making the Mets is like Lazarus coming out of the tomb and a great reminder for all of us during this Easter season, the same God of the Bible is still doing things in people's lives today just like He did back in those 'ol crinkly pages of scripture.

What does all of this mean for you? Bill Belichick used to say, "We are in a bottom line business," well with that said what is the bottom line in this split finger fastball? For starters, dreams can and do come true. Your dream can come true. Let's pause for stations to identify themselves.

Your dream can come true.

My friend Marc Trestman once said to me, "If you can see it, you can achieve it." Marc Trestman is the only coach in football history to coach two different league MVP's in two different leagues (NFL and CFL). Hey, if Eric Mangini can go from coaching the Kew Colts, a semi-professional team in Melbourne Australia to becoming a head coach in the NFL, if Kurt Warner can go from bagging groceries and playing in NFL Europe to being the Super Bowl MVP and if I could go from playing one year of high school football to working on the best staff in NFL history, trust me, anything is possible. It just takes moving towards it. How do you do that, like I always tell everyone else who comes to me for advice about their dreams, "Pay very special attention to the ideas that just pop into your head out of nowhere and pay very special attention to the people who God sends into your path."

When I was a teenager, I designed a play and sent it to Joe Gibbs, who was the Washington Redskins Head Coach back then. He actually used that play and it worked for a touchdown in a pre-season game and later again for a touchdown in the Super Bowl against the Denver Broncos. Right now, I am drawing up another play design that will change your life forever, the play comes out of Mark 9:23, "If you can believe, all things are possible."

Wrap your head around that. Really think about it.

"If you can believe, all things are possible."

Interview: Valérie Durussel - SAFV Press Officer

$

There are so many amazing people working behind the scenes, helping grow football inside and outside the borders of their countries. Valérie Durussel is one of them. Originally a journalist, coming into football by accident - and now, working for the Swiss Association as their Press Officer.

HI FOOTBALL!

I was asked, back in 2013, to go to the first season game of La Côte Centurions, in order to write an article about them, for a regional paper. The sport journalist that I was did not even know people play American Football in Switzerland… I thought it would be the first and last time I would watch or talk about this sport in my life.

I remember spending four days doing my research and trying to “understand” the rules and be prepared for a sport I knew absolutely nothing about – except the “they wear a helmet and the ball is oval” thing.

When leaving the team after the game, my mind had already changed. Not that I had understood strategies, but the team and staff was so keen to help me and showed so much passion that I felt I needed to do my part to get them as much recognition as possible.

Two years later, La Côte Centurions president Gleb Iatsenia, suggested I could, (as French speaker journalist, who speaks German), help the Swiss Federation (SAFV) and here I am, doing my bit on a national scale as the press officer.

PRESS OFFICER

My role is to make the Swiss National Teams (tackle and flag) as visible as possible, to publish SAFV official statements, but above all to create the ground for SAFV communication to work on in the future. As I am the first one assigned to this role – the previous committee had the technical director to handle this task – I have started from the scratch in 2016.

This goes from collecting relevant players, coaches data, as well as producing pictures archives for SAFV to use now and in the future. Contact with the national and local press as well as providing communication advices to the teams is also a part of my role. Of course, at the same time I have to find tricks and ways to make sure the audience feels linked to SAFV championships and national teams. I have to find ways to make our fans’ hearts melt.

One thing for sure: it’s never easy. I want this structure to be as solid as possible so the effort made will not be lost. The job is huge and obviously never over, but these players, coaches, staff members and fans are passionate about this sport and give so much to be able to play, watch… This makes my role really interesting and exciting.

PROUD MOMENTS

I’m always proud when I see people giving all they have for a national team. The atmosphere and the energy are always so special and it really gets me.

End of February (13th) we held a U19 selection camp in Biel/Bienne, in order to get ready for the Euro qualifier in Almere (Holland) in June (2-4th). These guys had never played together, it was the second time they trained together as a team and I was amazed to feel their team spirit growing as much as their motivation. This made me proud, because the sleepless nights working and the stress is worth, if these young men give their best to be the best ambassadors possible.

I am also really proud to see the effort some clubs make to make this game visible. I heard about some projects and ideas that are just brilliant. Creativity and motivation are not lacking.

Obviously, I am really happy to see that 36 girls, who are now officially members of the Calanda Broncos, are committed to play tackle in Switzerland. They are the only team at the moment, but SAFV hopes to soon have a first women Swiss champion. This would be a huge moment of pride for a lot of us and for me.

WOMAN IN FOOTBALL

I don’t think men are happy when they see women accessing a position in sport. Not that they would all be machos, but because we (the society) did not let them get use to women getting interested in sport, and I have often felt concern when men see me for the first time as a journalist or PR.

But I think it is slowly changing. As a response to that, I see myself thinking way ahead to try to prevent the “she can’t understand, she is a girl” attitude. This means surely background work to prove I am here to work and not be the pretty thing.

I developed a good social and psychological analysis that, most of the times, helps me being treated as a PR or journalistic job and not a woman. I also quickly found out that the phrase: “I understand this, I saw this, but not that, please help me” is gold. Because it contrasts from the arrogance, one – journalist, player, fan etc - can have when speaking about sport. But, that cannot prevent everything.

The best way to overcome it is to talk about it and feel sorry for the person and not let it affect your job. In the end, I tend to think I’m not working to make friends, but to bring something. Ironically, this is what gets you friends ;)

ADDITIONAL TASKS?

Oh! I must say, I have so much to do that I haven’t thought about that. My focus is completely set on my communication and linked projects I’m putting into place.

ADVICE FOR WOMEN IN FOOTBALL

You can do amazing things. Keep on pushing, because the boundaries you come across are due to be lifted. There is no reason why you can’t join in and do your part, as a player, staff member, coach etc.

You will always find people who are not happy with you being there, but remember, it goes the same for young men too, when they try to not just be a player or a fan. Just be positive and try to turn every opportunity and experience into a lesson. And above all, don’t forget to have fun!

Did Czech Association Get Robbed Of Hosting Rights For Flag EU Championship?

Statement on FF CC 2017

Czech Association of American Football (ČAAF) has decided not to host the Flag Football European Championship this year. The tournament´s financing was assured and unique venue (Vítkovice Arena in Ostrava) was ready to host the games. However, due to „political“ uncertainities in Europe, we decided not to host the tournament, because we don´t want to be part of political games.

We were aiming to host great tournament and our first and only focus was football. We hope, that as soon as the European situation is clear, the European Championship will „return“ back to Czechia.

ČAAF, or Czech football in general, paid the price for endless fights between two groups claiming that they are reigning bodies in football, so called groups IFAF New York and IFAF Paris.

Czechia got the European Championship late in 2014 after a selection procedure of IFAF Europe, which was sub-federation of world federation at that time. Everybody knew the result, there was no doubt about the hosting country.

During years of 2015 and 2016, political situation escalated and IFAF was splitted. However, it was no typical split into two organisations, the situation is bizarre in long term as two groups are claiming, that they are the proper and only leaders and what more, both groups behave in manners, that there is no problem at all. So there are duplicated meetings, competitions etc. Only bank account remained one and has been frozen for many months…

All troubles occurred, when IFAF´s president of that time, Wiking, was in prison and his Sweden gave up hosting of world tackle championship. Wiking became persona non grata in almost all developed (football-related) countries with two exceptions – Germany and France. And this German-French duo welcomed Wiking despite the previous rivalry. Actually, rivalry remained, only one of captains switched between boats…

The split was created by Wiking´s decision to step down in a few weeks period, but he changed his mind just one day before that period expired and this seems to be the key part. One group insists, that he stepped down, period. Another group thinks otherwise.

Group IFAF New York (called according of world meeting in 2016) is now supported by all big countries (USA, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Australia) and by Scandic countries and Great Britain in Europe. IFAF Europe sub-federation should act on European soil for this group, but elected leaders of IFAF Europe don´t want to make decisions, as they fear potential legal action made by other group and it´s not worth for them.

The other group, IFAF Paris, is mostly based on support of Germany, France and Spain and not really developed countries as Ireland or even fictional (football-related!) countries as Greece, Kosovo or Myanmar. Number of countries in both groups are more or less leveled, but only in case (for example) Greece should be counted in, despite the fact, they do not run football. This group founded brand new European federation and, to create even more mess, they named it IFAF Europe. Chairman is Spaniard Castro, honorary chairman is German Huber.

ČAAF tried to contact „Paris“ late in 2016, because we wanted to know, who to get in touch with and who will be the contact for EC. Paris´ reaction was quite shocking – ČAAF has been supposed to abandon the tournament already… And in very next email, Paris added, that „old“ IFAF Europe hasn´t given any information about hosting of the tournament and therefore Paris doesn´t know, who is actually the hosting country. Note, that Paris suddenly doesn´t know, who previously won the election procedure, but on the other hand, they knew, that Czechia gave it up…

Meanwhile, information about decision to give the tournament to Spain (yes, Paris´ chairman is a Spaniard), was mentioned on a private facebook group for flag football coaches. After a month of ignoring of us, without being informed as „former host country“ or possible participant, same information was posted on facebook profile of Spanish federation. Still no official information. Straight and simple, Paris lied to us and they stole the championship from us.

Despite the fact, that we weren´t able to believe, that such something could be true, we tried also to contact New York. Why? We can´t host a tournament on our own and call it European Championship. New York would agree and would support the tournament, but it looked like, that tournament would be used as power forcing countries to choose and make statement, which group they prefer and support and participants would have to express the loyalty to New York.

This was an obstacle for ČAAF as we don´t agree with such condition and it would obviously affect also other countries and while the tournament was prepared also from economic point of view, it was calculated for more than four or five countries, what could be the worst scenario. Not to mention, that tournament with four nations is probably not real EC.

So, under pressure of such condition, under possible threat of legal actions from Paris group and under uncertainty of number or participants, ČAAF decided to forego the tournament and we will hope, that once Europe becomes finally united, we will get the tournament again.

CEFL: Double Opener / Budapest Cowbells vs Belgrade SBB Vukovi Livestream

The competition in the Eastern Conference of CEFL Championship is starting with two games this Saturday. Kragujevac Wild Boars are welcoming the newcomer to the league, Istanbul Koc Rams. At the same time, Budapest Cowbells are hosting a well-known opponent, Belgrade SBB Vukovi.

In addition to being reigning champions of their countries, both the Wild Boars and Koc Rams are undefeated in their national leagues so far. The Wild Boars have beat SBB Vukovi last week in the top Serbian league, while the Rams have already slated five wins in Turkey and are primed for the playoffs.

The Wild Boars’ offense will be organized by quarterback Ian McGinnis, who will have a big target in Strahinja Stepovic, returning to the team after playing in Turkey last year, for the very Koc Rams. The duo will be aided by running back Laurent Tshimanga, while Allen Ramsey II will shore up the defense. Koc Rams’ hopes are in embodied in quarterback Quentin Williams, and Charles Mccrea Jr and Andre Whyte, who play on both sides of the ball.

Emotionally shaken after a defeat in Kragujevac last week in the national league, SBB Vukovi are going to seek their chances in Budapest. Meanwhile, the Cowbells have lost their national league opener in the replay of last season’s finals. Now they’re expecting a long awaited rematch with SBB Vukovi, to whom they’ve lost last year in CEFL.

The Belgraders have brought in a couple of overseas reinforcements for their offense represented by the quarterback Lewis Kindle V and running back Duane Brady II. Hungarian team will stick with their homegrown players in the offense and their defense will be much improved with the internationals Michael Smith and Eric Agyeman taking part in it.

CEFL Cup Eastern Group is continuing this Saturday as well, when Indjija Indians welcome Novi Sad GAT Dukes, who are sitting on top of the standings list with their convincing win over Sirmium Legionaries.

CEFL: Lightning Round In Eastern Conference

Two great games were played in the Eastern Conference opening week of CEFL Championship. Both were won by Serbian teams in the last moments, with a touchdown and a field goal. Kragujevac Wild Boars have slated an important win against the great Istanbul Koc Rams, while Belgrade SBB Vukovi scraped by the ameliorated Cowbells team in Budapest.

After multiple unsuccessful drives in the first quarter by both teams, Koc Rams opened the scoring session in Kragujevac. An 82 yard shot play by their quarterback Quentin Williams to a former Wild Boar, Ivan Pavlovic lit up the board. An ironic coincidence takes care of tying the score. Strahinja Stepovic who played for the Rams last season returns the kickoff to half field first and then catches the pass by the quarterback Ian McGinnis in the end zone. Next, the Wild Boars hand the ball over near the 50 yard line, after a botched punt attempt. Williams takes the opportunity and ups the score with a 25 yard touchdown pass to Kaan Özer.

That was all the Turkish champion could muster, as the Wild Boars’ crushing defense left them scoreless in the second half. Their offense kept the momentum going and capped the following drives with a couple of McGinnis’ touchdowns to Filip Nedeljkovic. The Rams had the ball last, but their efforts to tie the game were thwarted by the opposing defense that drove them back near the goal line to end the game with the final score 21-14.

The game was delayed twice because of heavy rain and lightning safety, but the fans on the stadium were determined to stay until the very end. They were awarded with a tough game by two equal rivals and the Wild Boars were sure not to disappoint them in the end. They are half way toward the CEFL Bowl with only Budapest Cowbells standing in their way. The Hungarians were a step away from a win themselves today, losing to SBB Vukovi in the last quarter by 24-27.

CEFL Cup Eastern group has played one of its games today as well, when Indjija Indians faced their neighbors Novi Sad GAT Dukes. Both offenses were choppy in the first period, leaving a lot of plays on the field. The Dukes were the first to put the points up in the second quarter over their running back, Jermicheal Selders. They garnished another series with a field goal and left the final drive in the first half to their adversaries. The Indians struggle was ended by the whistle, because they couldn’t connect for the score in the last two seconds.

In the first play after the break, Indians former player Goran Zec returned the kickoff for 70 yard touchdown. Indians still could find their pace, and GAT Dukes took advantage of that, running the clock. Finally, their quarterback Christopher Jeffrey rushed for a score himself to end the game at 0-23.

Interview: Johan Stål - 17 years On The Field & Counting

$

Johan Stål is one of the top WR/DBs not just in Sweden, but in Europe as well. When not on the field, Stål focuses on strength and conditioning, out of his own facility Atletic City Sportsgym. And, last but not least, his devotion to the sport earned him a spot in the Hall of Fame.

We talked to Johan about his career since 2000 to now, as well as football in Sweden.

Background

I started playing in 2000 with Örebro Black Knights, 2004 i went to University of Concordia and then came back home after 1 year. Went to NFL Europe combine 2005, started playing for Carlstad Crusaders 2006 and played for them 06,07,09 and 2010 when we won the first gold ever for the club. After that, I came back to Örebro who stepped up to Superserien and since then I have played with them.

I was the 1 time Rookie of the year, 2 times Special Teams Player of the year, 2 times Wide Receiver of the year and 1 time MVP of the league. I have been team-captain in the junior and senior national team and i have played 20+ games with the Swedish Senior National Team.

Sweden Over The Years

BIG CHANGE. When I was younger, we almost never scouted opponents, only if they played a game close by and we went there and watched, now, we scout a lot more and each players is taking his own responsibility to watch and study each opponent. The level of football is a lot higher, players are better trained and KNOW football in a different way and practice is more organized then what it use to be.

Getting Better

Players should take pride in becoming better players and put more of their own time to do extra work, early morning sprints and so on. It's hard for us amateur players to make it all work, some people study and some work, some have families and it's just hard to get all the work done. If each player put in extra work, study film we would be a lot better I think.

Memorable Moments

Winning the first gold for Carlstad Crusaders 2010 is a moment I will never forget. It was an intense moment when that clock ran out and we were finally champs after losing so many finals. The semi-final against Tyresö 2013 with Örebro Black Knights is another big moment, when we won in overtime over a team that was A LOT BETTER than us according to the experts in Sweden.

And then of course, the entire experience of the World Championships in Japan 2007 is a cool thing I will always remember.

Wide Receivers

If we talk about European teams scouting for a WR to bring in - I would first look at his ball-skills and routes to see what he does good/bad. One big thing I think about when talking about imports is their passion for the game and if they are willing to do what it takes to help the team win.

2017

I will play for Örebro Black Knights and why is pretty simple.....I want to win that gold again! And I love playing for this team because of the team-spirit we have this year and awesome coaches. I do not know about hosting camps, we will have to wait and see about that :-)

CEFL: Colossal Clash

CEFL Championship Western Conference opens for business this Saturday when Wroclaw Panthers and Swarco Raiders cross paths. Both teams are the reigning champions of their countries and have also been impressive in their national leagues so far, with equal 3-0 scores each. The pair is new to CEFL but they have a great deal of experience in international competitions.

The Panthers are a young team with an impressively steep learning curve in their short history. Their proudest achievement is certainly the trophy of last season’s Champions League in their cases. They were the best team of its Final Four tournament last season, also played by Koc Rams who now take part in CEFL Eastern Conference. Panthers offense will be helped by quarterback Timothy Morovick, and running back Rickey Stevens, while defensive back Deante Battle shores up their defensive unit.

Their opponents, the Raiders are a team that always shoots for the highest goals. Respected by all European teams, they are the best team on the continent in the last decade with 3 Eurobowl titles under their belt in that period. They have appeared in the finals 5 times during that time and are the current vice-champions of that competition. Their game organizer will be Sean Shelton, who will target wide receiver Kyle Callahan, while their defense is led by lineman Jermaine Guynn and defensive back Enrico Martini.

Game will be broadcast on Sportklub TV for the fans in the region under its coverage. This one will be a treat not to be missed by football connoisseurs.

Meanwhile in CEFL Cup Western group, Zagreb Patriots start their season by hosting Kranj Alp Devils. The Slovenians already have one win versus Sarajevo Spartans and the Patriots are the champions of last year’s Central Conference. Croatian team has imported two linemen, an offensive one, Larry Nitka and defensive, Billy Sparks, who will be helped by a number of internationals.

Also in CEFL Cup, in Eastern group, Belgrade Blue Dragons welcome Sirmium Legionaries. The Blue Dragons are beginning their CEFL Cup journey and the Legionaries have lost to Novi Sad Gat Dukes earlier in the season. Belgraders have a perfect 2-0 score in the national league thus far and the Legionaries are half and half with 1-1 in the same competition.

CEFL: Fantastic Night In Wroclaw

Olympic stadium in Wroclaw was the stage of a fantastic game last night. Home team, Wroclaw Panthers set the rhythm from the start with their quarterback Timothy Morovick passing to Patryk Matkowski for 20 yards. Morovick then continued to move the chains with his own rushes to finally cross the goal line on a 1 yard surge.

When SWARCO Raiders got the ball, quarterback Sean Shelton and running back Sandro Platzgummer began their own soiree. The two connect for passes of 12 and 25 yards and Shelton add his own 20 yard dash which is enough for a field goal by Fabial Abfalter.

The pair is mirrored in the very next drive by Panthers’ own dynamic duo of Morovick and running back Adam Skakowski. They take turns rushing for first downs through a porous Raiders defense, for Skakowski to end with a 4 yard rushing touchdown.

Austrian team takes over with another running back, Tobias Bonatti’s 40 yard grab before the end of the first quarter. A couple of passes later, Shelton jumps into the end zone again for 2 yards.

Panthers don’t let up for a moment. Morovick delivers accurate passes and rushes himself twice for 12 yards. Skakowski pierces the defense for a 19 yard running score.

Raiders connect the scoring plays with a kickoff return touchdown by Platzgummer, proving to the deflated audience in Wroclaw that his 7 touchdowns in the national league were no fluke.

After an ineffective drive that ends near their own end zone, Panthers’ special team falters again, punting the ball just 25 yards away from it. Platzgummer takes advantage of the short field hauling in a 20 yard pass and Shelton finishes the drive with a 2 yard quarterback sneak for a score. Raiders take the first lead in the game and never let go from there.

Poles have the last drive of the half and Morovick plays hurry up with precision passes to Kłoskowski twice for 10 yards and Adam Nelip for 37 yards. Touchdown seems to be within grasp right before he’s sacked for the loss of 15 yards. The intermission ensues with the score 20-24.

Panthers’ special team partially redeems itself in the first play of the second half, stripping the ball from the kickoff returner Bonatti and taking over at the opponent’s 29 yard line. This time however, Raiders defense picks up the slack and stops Morovick and company, only for their offense to sputter.

After a couple of fruitless drives by both teams, Platzgummer plays a simultaneous exhibition with the Panthers defense, clutching Shelton’s passes from the air left and right and scoring the only passing touchdown of the game for 18 yards.

Morovick and Skakowski rotate in offense between themselves rushing for first downs, eventually having to turn the ball over to Raiders. This time, Platzgummer’s catches are not enough for a score and the Panthers get the ball back again on their own 27 yards.

Time is quickly dwindling and they know it’s their last chance to close the 10 point gap. After a couple of productive rushes, Morovick fires a deep pass to the right, only to be intercepted by defensive back Patrick Pilger, who returns the ball to Panthers’ 20 yard line. With two minutes on the clock, Raiders bring the game to a close with short runs and a field goal of 28 yards.

Panthers head coach, Nick Johansen, who served as the offensive line coach to the Raiders in earlier seasons, lauded his team after the game: “I couldn’t be more proud of our team. We played a good game but made some mistakes and the Raiders took advantage of them. Hats off to them, they played their tails off and we couldn’t ask for a better test tonight.”

After playing a near perfect game in the second half, completely stopping opposing offense, Raiders captain, defensive lineman Jermaine Guynn had this to say: “We weren’t communicating well at first, we were excited, so we had to come down and play our system. They came out strong but once we settled down we started playing better defense.”

Next game in the Western Conference of CEFL Championship is in a fortnight, when SWARCO Raiders play host to Triangle Razorbacks in Innsbruck. With the win in Wroclaw, the Austrians are one win away from CEFL Bowl, but the Danish champion will have plenty to say about that.

Final score - 20:33

Interview: Marianne Konster - Aiming High & Dreaming Big In The Sports Media World

Marianne Konster has been around football for quite some time, working to help promote the game in Finland. Most of her work is around media, however, she is making a big impact in her homeland. You also may remember her taking over our Facebook during American Football Without Barriers camp, as well as the first game of the Northern European Football League season between Helsinki Roosters and Uppsala 86ers.

BACKGROUND

My love for American football began in my teens. I was waiting to see the Super Bowl halftime show and I did not want to miss it, so I decided that the best way to stay awake was to learn the basic rules of the sport so I would be motivated to stay up. In the end, I fell in love with the sport and the halftime show did not matter to me that much anymore.

Years later I was studying sport journalism in Haaga-Helia’s sport institute of Finland in Vierumäki. Part of the studies was to do two internships and I automatically thought about American football. So I contacted Suomen Amerikkalaisen Jalkapallon Liitto also known as SAJL, the Finnish federation. They asked me to come to the office to have a chat and at the end of the meeting they handed me the responsibility to do the media for Women’s World Championship 2013, which were held in Finland. I have been along for the ride ever since.

DAY TO DAY

Over the years I have had the chance to do everything under the sun in regards to media for the federation. I have done press, social media, photography, interviews and it has been a joy and a good learning process for me.

The past three seasons I have been the game day TV reporter for our National football league Vaahteraliiga. My responsibilities have included doing the pregame, halftime and postgame interviews. I have also been the link between our production company, the teams and other personnel during game days.

For the season 2017., my job description changes a bit as I am going to be part of our game day production company MobileTV. I will still be doing interviewing during the season however they have offered me the possibility to educate myself on the production of the Vaahteraliiga broadcasting, so I will also be doing graphics and editing for the TV and social media as well.

It is going to be exciting season as for the first time we will have all Vaahteraliiga games (45) live on TV instead of one weekly game. This is a big step for football in Finland and I will have the chance to part of every game! How I see what I do is more than just asking questions, I see it as widening and engaging bigger audiences to the sport. My job is to transfer information and to bring football closer to people watching the games at home.

PROUD MOMENTS

We have had the same team in our TV game production for the past three years and I’m most proud of what we have accomplished together. Like football, TV production is team effort. Everyone needs to know their tasks, what to do and where to be. We are live on TV and anything can happen, and we as a unit have to handle every situation without skipping a beat. And I can tell you everything possible has happened! Main thing is that no one at home watching the game knows what is going on behind the scenes.

My crew is everything to me during the summer, we are the “dream team” as we have jokingly called ourselves! We are a small family during summer and this summer will be no exception as now we are going see each other three times more!

Also the success of the Women’s World Championships in 2013 was a highlight for me. We exceeded all our goals and like said it was my first experience to work in football so I am very proud of the outcome.

WOMAN IN FOOTBALL

I do not see that there have been obstacles, although when I first started in football I always kept hearing that “she is not from football” meaning I had never played, I came from outside the football community. I tried not to take it personally or negatively, I just do not think people understand everything I do. What I want people to understand is that we do not do football just for the people who already are part of football, our job is to grow the sport. As an “outsider” I think I can see this more clearly than some who have been in the football bubble for decades.

There are always people with opinions, you just have to focus on what you do and believe in what you do. Also as women there are more chances of rumors and gossip, yet again just know your own truth that is what matters. Do your job to the best of your abilities and do not let anyone affect that.

I am sure there is always, in every field of business, little resistance and hesitance when someone new comes along, women or a man. My experience to entering football has still been very positive and I have met the most amazing people along the way.

I am doing what I love to do. This coming season I get to learn new skills and educate myself which is important for me to be able to grow professionally.

Ultimately I would like to work in sports media outside of Finland. Learn how it is done in the BIG world. Always aim high and dream big.

WORDS OF WISDOM

Do not ever let anyone say you cannot do something. You can, just believe in yourself and what you do. Your ideas and input are as valuable as anyone else’s.

No matter who you are, where you are from or what is your past if you are passionate about something show it and good things will come. It might take a while but it is worth it.

Be bold, be brave and be a go-getter!

Like the slogan I came up with for the Women’s World Championship 2013: Tough game, tougher women! Includes both women on the field and off.
